Monday November 15th- Sunday November 21st

This week went quite well. I went to the gym on Monday from 6:30 until 7:30am. I didn’t beat my personal best but I did burn more than 300 calories which is an improvement. I went to Zumba on Tuesday from 6:30-7:30pm. I realized why I am starting to not feel like going to zumba. We have been doing the same dances each class every week and I have yet to be challenged. This week though we learned 2 more dances which was nice because I enjoyed myself since I was being challenged and had something new to try. This weekend, I went home to my parents’ farm and on Saturday we went snow-shoeing in and around our yard for about 20 minutes. It was nice to spend time with my parents and to appreciate the beauty in nature, as cheesy as that sounds. We would have went longer but we had a busy day so we didn’t have much time. I am really looking forward to later in December when I will be home with my parents and we will be able to do some more snow-shoeing.

I ate a lot better this week than I did last week. One thing I really noticed when I went home was the difference in eating habits that I have. If there are snacks out or if someone else is eating something, I tend to eat too even though I might not be hungry. I also felt like I over ate because I love my mom’s home cooking so much. This is probably quite a common feeling for university students. I decided that when I am home with my parents for nearly a month in December, I’m going to continue to improve my eating habits so that I can be confident that I can eat healthy no matter where I am. I am also planning to have my mom teach me a few things in the kitchen since that was something I wanted to improve on in this project.



Monday November 8th- Sunday November 14th

This week was a very busy one. On Monday, I went to the gym for an hour. I worked very hard and got another personal best on the eliptical. I got 313 calories burned this time! I was very excited about this. On Tuesday I didn’t go to Zumba. I felt really terrible for not going but I had a ton to get done and had had a very busy day already. I had Thursday and Friday off from school and I thought I would get a lot done and get some exercise but I ended up being busy visiting family and what not. I was a bit disappointed in myself for not being more active this week especially because I ate out lots since I was in Saskatoon and not at my own house. I’m definitely planning to eat a lot better this upcoming week which will be easier since I will be home and able to cook instead of eating out which I don’t do very often but did lots of this weekend. On a more positive note, I got a lot of rest this weekend which was well needed. School has been very busy with all of our assignments and projects being due very soon. I needed some time to rest and recuperate so that I can avoid stress. So far, so good but we will see in the next couple of weeks how things go.

Monday November 1st- Sunday November 7th

This week was very similar to other weeks. I went to the gym on Monday for an hour and had Zumba class on Tuesday evening. I was very proud of myself on Monday when I went to the gym. I got my personal best on the eliptical. Usually by the end, I have burned about 280 calories and this week I pushed myself and worked very hard and got 300 calories. I was really happy with myself. On Tuesday at Zumba I also felt like I was able to push myself and do better than normal. When I got tired and could feel my muscles burning, I pushed myself harder to keep going. I actually put more effort into it and pushed harder instead of just slowing down and getting lazier. I wasn’t feeling well on Wednesday and Thursday so I just tried to take it easy and get lots of rest… which was very difficult since this time in the semester is very busy. We have many projects and assignments that are due so I have been trying to get a lot of homework done.

This weekend, I was very inactive. I also didn’t have much of an appetite and this might be because I haven’t been doing too much. I decided that I would have a “homework” weekend. On Friday, I put in a solid 2 hours of homework time. On Saturday, I did 11 whole hours of homework and on Sunday I did about 8. I felt that I accomplished a lot and was able to organize myself so that I don’t have a stressful and extremely busy time at the end of the semester. What I noticed this weekend was my need for brain breaks. I was doing a lot of typing and sitting at the computer but every once and a while without giving it any thought I would stand up and walk or dance around the house. I found that I worked a lot better after I had taken these couple minutes to move around. I know how important movement and physical activity is for the brain and I’m glad to be noticing and taking advantage of these benefits!


Monday October 25th- Sunday October 31st

This week went pretty well. I went to the gym for an hour on Monday morning and had my Zumba class on Tuesday for an hour. That seems to be the two things I’ve actually stuck to doing. On Friday, I had set my alarm to get up and go to the gym at 6:00am but when my alarm went off, I just could not force myself to get up. I’ve been wanting to be motivated to go and for exercise not to feel like a chore but it felt almost torturous to make myself get up that morning. As I think about it, I realize how hard I’m being on myself. I felt very guilty for not having gone to the gym but I should be proud of myself. I HAVE improved my lifestyle. I have been eating a lot better. I pack healthy snacks in my lunch like peas, strawberries, carrots, cucumbers, grapes, and yogurt. It has been a good change and I really like that I don’t have much desire for junk food anymore and if I do eat something that isn’t very good for me, I feel guilty… which I think is a great thing! I also have been drinking a lot more water than I used to. I’m very happy with the progress I’ve made although I wish I could be a bit more active. I have been very busy recently with school though, so I’ve done okay considering the circumstances. Recently I’ve also noticed my clothes fitting better especially my jeans. I’m so happy I’m starting to feel good and healthy. 🙂

Monday October 18th- Sunday October 24th

This week was far better than last week. I went to the gym on Monday morning for an hour. On Tuesday I had my Zumba class. It felt great to be back at my dance class. I love the music and the constant moving. I’m really enjoying taking a dance class again.

Last week, I had focused on getting a lot of sleep. I did some more research and found another very interesting article called “How Much Sleep Do You Need.” In the article,  it lists symptoms of sleep deprivation. I was surprised to realize that I have all of the symptoms! I very often have naps, have trouble getting out of bed in the morning, feel very sleepy during lectures or in warm rooms, and need an alarm clock to get up in the morning. Since I still have these symptoms, sleep patterns is something that I really want to keep focusing on. I realize how important my sleep is and how healthy it can make me feel.

This week I really wanted to focus on drinking lots of water. I know that I never drink as much water as I should but this week, I really tried to drink more than usual. Instead of buying juice, I have instead been drinking water. I did a bit of research and my thoughts and ideas about water were confirmed when I read an article called “11 Benefits of Drinking Water.” It talked about how water can help you lose weight, helps reduce headaches, makes you more productive and so much more. Reading these types of articles really motivates me to drink more water and to become healthier overall. I know that I am doing the right and good thing to try and change my lifestyle for the better.

Monday October 11th- Sunday October 17th

This week was by far my worst week so far. Monday was Thanksgiving so I was at home in Zenon Park and I was exhausted from a long busy weekend so I did not do any physical activity. Even if I had been in Regina, I could not have gone to the gym since it was closed. On Tuesday, I had a very busy day. I was very rushed going to Zumba class at 6:30. When I arrived, the instructor was having trouble with the stereo and we actually ended up canceling class. I was very disappointed since I had counted on this time for my physical activity of the day. I continued to have a very busy and exciting week so I actually didn’t do any physical activity until Friday morning when I went to the gym from 6:30 till 7:30am.

Although I wasn’t very physically active this week, I did try to get plenty of sleep. This was not very hard since I was very tired each night and was organized enough that I did not have to stay up late doing homework. I found a good article that is entitled “Guide to Healthy Sleep.” It states that the appropriate amount of hours of sleep needed each night varies per person but is usually about 7 to 8 hours for adults. I always try to get 8 hours of sleep but usually I only sleep about 7 and sometimes 6. Now that I understand the benefits of getting sleep, I would really liked to improve my sleep pattern so that when I am awake I can function the best and be the most productive possible.

Since beginning my professional development plan 3 weeks ago, I have been feeling really great! I feel energetic, productive, and busy! I really do feel that my lifestyle change has been really positive for me. I have been very organized and getting lots of homework done. I am managing my time better. I really hope things continue to go well (even though I definitely wasn’t as physically active this week as I would like to be!) and that I can continue to receive the benefits of having a healthy active lifestyle.

Monday October 4th- Sunday October 10th

I had a really good week two! I achieved most of my goals and stuck to my schedule. On Monday, I went to the gym from 6:30 till 7:30. I was very tired that day since I had had a busy weekend. I was also feeling very hungry but I made sure to keep things healthy by eating fruit and vegetables when snacking. On Tuesday, I attended my first Zumba class from 6:30-7:30 pm. I loved it! I can’t remember the last time that I sweat that much. The music is super catchy and I really did enjoy myself. I felt very refreshed after my Zumba class. On Wednesday, I went to the gym in the morning and had a very productive and busy day. Thursday, I did not do any planned physical activity but I was busy all day and ate healthy. On Friday, I went to the gym in the morning and felt very good going into the long weekend. On Saturday, I was at home in Zenon Park and went for a brisk walk with my mom and sister. On Sunday, I had 2 thanksgiving meals but I did not over eat. I went to bed early and got some rest.

This week, I was very proud of myself for sticking to schedule. It felt great to be so active! After such long, busy days, I’m finding that I am very tired but have trouble getting to bed. I really think I need to start trying to get myself into a good sleep schedule where I know I am allowing my body and mind to rest enough so that I can have enough energy for the busy days I still to be having recently. I was also proud of myself this week for eating healthy. I ate many fruit and vegetables in lunch. I’ve been trying to drink more water than usual but I know that I still need to drink more. I have never been much of a water drinker other than when I am doing physical activity so I think it would be beneficial to me to drink water throughout the day and not only during or after physical activity.
